Girl nerds of the world rejoice, Netflix is bringing us not one but two Sofia Carson rom-coms in the same year. Did The Life List feel like an Emily In Paris rework set in New York with a more emotionally evocative backstory? Yes (dead mom always trumps shitty boyfriend from Chicago). Did we still love it anyway? Also, yes. Are we ready to copy and paste this equation to the not-so-dark-academia halls of Oxford? HELL yes we are.
Netflix
The new romance is adapted from Julia Whelan’s novel of the same name, and places Carson in the role of another young woman with a childhood dream to fulfill. Anna is an American scholar who falls for a charming local during her planned one-year stay across the pond, changing both of their lives in the process.
Corey Mylchreest of Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story plays Anna’s love interest, Jamie, and Carson’s compliments for her co-star seem like promising indications for on-screen magic.
Netflix
Where the Anna of the novel is a Rhodes scholar with lofty political ambitions and a job waiting for her back in D.C., Netflix PR promises a film “steeped in literature and poetry”. We’ll have to wait until August 1 to see how the adaptation plays out, but I’m not embarrassed to say I wouldn’t be upset if it delivers on all the Oxford bookworm fantasies of R.F. Kuang’s Babel with the lighthearted girl-power, feel-good nature of a Legally Blonde.

I watched Queen Charlotte in awe of Corey. He’s an extraordinary force of an actor. When it came time to cast Jamie, I always knew it would be Corey. As soon as he walked into the room for our chemistry read in London, Anna and Jamie came to life. Instantly. Corey was a true partner in this experience . . . And together we were dedicated to diving into Anna and Jamie’s love story, to bring it to life with every bit of our hearts.
