M. Night Shyamalan is known for scary movies with a twist ending. Nicholas Sparks is known for romantic books (and film adaptations) that tug at the audiences’ heart. Both men have distinct genres that don’t typically overlap — but their upcoming collab, Remain, looks to be the ultimate romantic thriller, with Jake Gyllenhaal attached to star.

Remain is a supernatural romantic thriller co-created by the two heavyweights. Sparks will write the book and Shyamalan will write the screenplay. The two worked together on creating the story and both will also produce the film.

Remain is about “New York architect Tate Donovan as he arrives in Cape Cod to design his best friend’s summer home. Donovan is looking for a fresh start after his recent discharge from a psychiatric facility where he was treated for acute depression. Still grappling with the loss of his beloved sister, Donovan meets Wren, a young woman who makes him challenge everything he knows about his logical and controlled world.”

Shyamalan just posted the cover to the book on his Instagram, which will be in stores on October 7, 2025:

Shyamalan shared the cover for the Sparks book on his Instagram.

While Sparks is known as a writer, he is no stranger to the big screen. Eleven of his novels have been adapted into films. His most well-known film is The Notebook, which made almost $120 million at the box office and is still beloved by audiences. Remain will be his 26th book.

The film is in development with no release date set.

Gyllenhaal is set to be in another upcoming scary movie, his sister Maggie Gyllenhaal’s Frankenstein adaptation, The Bride, set to release in March 2026.
