We fell in love with Holt McCallany in his role as FBI Special Agent Bill Tench on Netflix’s psychological true crime series Mindhunter when it first aired in 2017. He was the perfect foil and friend to partner Holden Ford, and had an incredibly character arc as he worked to balance the deeply disturbing aspects of his career with a strained home life and relationship with his wife and adopted son, Brian.
The series, from Fight Club and Gone Girl‘s David Fincher, was cancelled after the third season had been put on indefinite hold, due to budget concerns. Disappointed fans never got to see Tench and Holden’s story come to a satisfying resolution, or a confrontation with the heavily referenced BTK Killer.

As compensation, we can at least celebrate the return of McCallany to Netflix in his new role as Harlan Buckley on The Waterfront. In talking to CBR for a promotional interview, he shared an alternate path the story may take to reaching fans:
McCallany also expressed gratitude for his time on the series and its impact on his career, as well as his relationship with Fincher, who he claims is “the best director in Hollywood”. With other beloved Netflix series like The OA sparking similar hope of return in press interviews, we can only hope these projects come to fruition as more than dangling carrots that capture attention during press tours.
Until then, you can stream Mindhunter and The Waterfront on Netflix.

So look, you know, I had a meeting with David Fincher in his office a few months ago, and he said to me that there is a chance that it may come back as three two-hour movies, but I think it’s just a chance. I know there are writers that that are working, but you know, David has to be happy with scripts.
