Jacob Elordi was never my first pick for Heathcliff, but that being said, I don’t think anyone in real life was. He is just one of those characters that lives best in your imagination depicted only by your mind’s eye. There is just too much at stake, too much that could go wrong, close to two centuries worth of fans to disappoint. Well, here we are face to face with the latest slew photos released exclusively by The Mail on Sunday, and let me tell you I am not exaggerating when I say some of those fans must be rolling in their graves: Jacob Elordi is sporting a gold tooth with a side of muttonchops, and I am not about it. At all.

It’s giving Oliver‘s Bill Sykes meets Harry from Home Alone, and cheapening this Byronic, demonic titan of literature. When I first heard about this casting, I immediately thought Elordi’s delicate, and somewhat angelic features would be better suited for playing Heathcliff’s rival, Edgar Linton. It would have been a smooth transition from his high-bred character from Saltburn. Barry Keoghan would kill as the drunk and abusive Hindley Earnshaw. His performance in Sabrina Carpenter’s music video told me as much.

But I just don’t understand how we got here. I am hoping to god there is something Emerald Fennell knows that the rest of us don’t. Some life changing, earth shattering performance Elordi has waiting to burst out, shutting all of our mouths once and for all in that solidifies him eternally in the role the same way doubters now bow down to J. Lo’s Selena. Or maybe those hopes are so high, I’m clinically delulu. Either way, there’s no way I’ll be able to avert my eyes if it becomes a train wreck, and will never forgive Fennell if some high schooler who refuses to read the book has their impression of this masterpiece ruined by a poor choice in dental costumery.
